1. Overview

This document describes how Virtual Service Router shall be set up to operate as UPF in the 5GS.

1.1. Supported features

Summary of the main features currently supported by Virtual Service Router UPF.

With respect to PDU sessions:

  • Behaving either as a PSA or an I-UPF.

  • Combining both in ULCL/BP scenarios.

  • Network instance affiliation. A single SMF may manage multiple network instances. Network instances are isolated from each other by associating them with VRFs.

Per-session QoS properties:

  • Default QoS flow based on the PDR carrying the default QoS rule.

  • Nondefault QoS flows with independent QFIs from submitted QERs.

  • Associating SDF filters with PDRs.

  • QoS flow-specific MBR.

  • Session-AMBR.

  • Exclusion of GBR flows from Session-AMBR.

  • Standardized 5QI profiles for MDBV and related characteristics necessary to enforce MBR when not explicitly specified through QERs.

SMF PFCP message types:

  • Association setup.

  • Session establishment and modification.

  • Heartbeat.
